Addressing Urban Transportation Challenges
The partnership comes in response to increasing traffic congestion in urban areas and limited alternative transportation options for business travelers and tourists. Regional cities in Japan that lack adequate public transport options are experiencing out-migration and an aging population, highlighting the need for innovative solutions such as the services being introduced by JAL and Lime. By promoting the use of shared, lightweight electric vehicles, the partnership aims to alleviate car traffic congestion, reduce overcrowding on existing public transport, improve air quality, and decrease the space needed for private vehicle storage.
JAL VISION 2030 Initiative
As part of its JAL VISION 2030 initiative, Japan Airlines is expanding its focus beyond traditional transportation services to include Mobility as a Service (MaaS). This strategic shift aims to enhance and maintain local transportation options, fostering better connections within communities.
Lime launched its services in Japan on August 19, 2024, promoting electric micromobility as a sustainable public transport option. This partnership is set to facilitate intra-regional movement for both local residents and travelers.
Key Components of the Partnership
-
Mileage Collaboration: This partnership introduces Japan’s first mileage collaboration between an airline and an electric micromobility sharing service. Riders will earn 1 JAL mile for every 100 yen spent on Lime services.
-
Port Network Expansion: JAL will support Lime in developing its port network in Tokyo and other cities. The first installation will occur in Naha City, Okinawa, with 40 ports and 180 vehicles available starting November 7, 2024.
-
Short-Term Rental Development: The collaboration will also focus on developing a short-term rental business for local governments, companies, and tourist destinations, marking Lime’s first destination business in Japan.
Enhanced Consumer Incentives
To celebrate this collaboration, Air Canada is introducing two consumer-facing promotions running until December 31, 2024:
-
First-Time Use Campaign: New users who register their JAL mileage membership in the Lime app will receive 100 bonus miles for their first ride.
-
Double Miles Campaign: Users who register their JAL mileage membership in the Lime app and use Lime services will earn double the standard miles.
Commitment to Sustainable Transportation
Lime operates using e-scooter ports that allow riders to easily find and park their vehicles. Japan Airlines will assist Lime in securing new ports in tourist areas, enhancing the convenience of micromobility options. Terry Tsai, Country Manager and Regional Head of Asia Pacific for Lime, emphasized the partnership’s goal of reducing carbon footprints and improving connections across service zones.
